“My identity led me to this degree. As a transracially adopted individual, I felt a lack of knowledge regarding my identity, supposed community, and knowledge on the history of African American people within the United States. Ethnic Studies was the only place on campus that provided the education I was seeking.
“When I graduate, I specifically want to work with marginalized groups and individuals who share an identity with me. Due to socioeconomic statuses within the U.S., the groups I am intending to serve are largely underrepresented within research and rarely receive access to mental health counseling. I believe that by entering this career field, I can advocate for others like myself, provide essential services and aid in financially planning a better path for generations to come.”
