River Schumann

Graduate Assistant/Fellow

River Schumann (they/he) is a master’s student in the College of Humanities, in Environmental Humanities. As a self-described Black feminist maroon, River challenges colonial theories of who belongs in nature to build Black feminist futurities and fugitive feminisms through exploring Black life worlds seen through melancholia, spirituality, and erotic embodiments. Grounded in Black feminist and Queer of Color Critique analysis, their current work aims to expand Black connections to water by examining life at the edge centering Beach zones and pull apart blackness as a radical anarchic space of fugitivity that distinctly disrupts the groundings of white supremacist narratives.
